Esther’s culinary story spans continents, cultures, and 25 years of dedicated craftsmanship. Born in Hatton, Sri Lanka, she began her working life in Colombo’s vibrant textile industry. But in 1995, as the civil war intensified, Esther made the courageous decision to leave her home behind in search of safety and opportunity. She landed in Toronto with little more than determination and a deep love for home-style cooking.
In Canada, Esther found her footing working for a catering company, where her natural talent in the kitchen quickly stood out. Her warm, generous spirit—and her unforgettable soups—soon became beloved by coworkers and clients alike.
In 2001, she took a leap of faith and opened Esther, Queen of Soups inside Cumberland Terrace. What began as a small food counter grew into a cherished local gem, known for comforting flavours, hearty portions, and the unmistakable taste of care in every bowl.
With 25 years in business, Esther has built a legacy rooted in resilience, craftsmanship, and community. Her soups carry the warmth of Sri Lanka, the heart of Toronto, and the journey of a woman who turned her lifelong passion into a place people return to again and again.
